Lucy Mary Smith was born on July 8, 1924 in Salisbury, North Carolina where she eventually returned and passed away on August 4th 2014 after 90 long and fruitful years living throughout these United States. She was the third of eight children born to the late Coke N. and Lula F. Gilliam. She received all of her elementary and high school education in Rowan County graduating with honors from Granite Quarry School.  She received a B. S. While living in San Francisco, she worked at Florence Crittenton Center for Unwed Mothers. For many years she served as a church administrative assistant  and local preacher at her husband’s side. She and Rev. Smith retired from their lifelong service to the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, but not from serving their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Together they created the international AME Zion Church logo, which was presented and accepted at the 1984 AME Zion General Conference of St. Louis.
